Planning a destination wedding is an exciting journey and a significant investment.

From securing your dream venue to booking photographers, florists and entertainment, many arrangements are made months, or sometimes years, in advance.
The majority of weddings go ahead exactly as planned but recent summers have highlighted the importance of being prepared for unexpected events, particularly as wildfires have become more common across parts of southern Europe so we would like to offer some reassurance and advice.
Can Wedding Insurance Cover Wildfires?
Not all wedding insurance policies are the same, so it’s important to read the policy carefully before purchasing.
Some policies include cover if your wedding has to be cancelled or postponed due to events such as
Wildfires affecting the wedding venue.
Official evacuation orders.
Road closures that make the venue inaccessible.
Significant damage to the venue caused by fire.
Other natural disasters covered under the policy.
Many insurers will only provide cover if there is an official reason why the wedding cannot go ahead, rather than simply because there is a wildfire somewhere nearby.
Buy Wedding Insurance Early
One of the most important things to remember is that insurance is designed to protect against unforeseen events.
Once a wildfire has already started, or there is a known threat to your wedding location, it is generally too late to purchase insurance for that particular event. Buying cover soon after booking your venue is the safest approach.
Understand Your Venue’s Cancellation Policy
Before signing any contract, ask your venue these following questions.
What happens if a natural disaster prevents my wedding from taking place?
Can my wedding be postponed rather than cancelled?
Will deposits be transferred to a new date?
Are your suppliers willing to move their services if circumstances are beyond everyone’s control?
Knowing the answers in advance can provide valuable peace of mind.
Don’t Forget Your Suppliers
Your venue is only one part of your wedding.
Consider how your photographer, florist, caterer, celebrant, entertainment, transport and accommodation providers would respond if your wedding date had to change. Many experienced destination wedding professionals are happy to work with couples to find alternative dates whenever possible.
Travel Insurance Is Different
Wedding insurance and travel insurance are not the same.
Travel insurance will protect your journey, flights or luggage, while wedding insurance is designed to help with the financial costs associated with the wedding itself. If you’re travelling from overseas, it’s worth having both.
Planning Ahead Brings Peace of Mind
Although wildfires receive significant media attention during the summer months, we want to reassure you they remain relatively uncommon when compared with the thousands of weddings that take place successfully across the Mediterranean every year.
Destination wedding planners are highly experienced in managing unexpected situations, and venues will continually monitor local conditions to ensure the safety of their guests.
By choosing reputable suppliers, understanding your contracts and considering appropriate insurance, you can enjoy your wedding planning with greater confidence, knowing you’ve taken sensible steps to protect your special day.
Never be afraid of asking questions.
